Comp go boom--ETA

I'll admit that I'm really not the best when it comes to computers. I'm pretty good with them operationally, but I don't know that much about them as machines, and I don't know much about one brand over another. I want them to work, and when they don't work, I want them fixed and fixed quickly, and I'm willing to be the guy who shells out the extra $200 for the 3 year warranty so that when things fuck up, it can be fixed. Sense and logic, right?

Except that despite the fact that we paid for the 3 year extended warranty, AH just got back from having to pay another nearly $200. $80 for them to try and save my stuff, if they have to do a complete and total burn it to the ground system restore (which I'm pissed about, but fine, we never got an external harddrive to do a backup of all my stuff, so I guess this is our penance) but the other $100? Because apparently this sounds like a software problem. And the extended warranty doesn't cover software problems.

What the ever-loving FUCK? I don't even... is this standard? What's the point of paying for the extended warranty if they're going to charge you all over again when you bring the damned thing in? I do NOT understand and I am confused and more than a little pissed off, although not quite as much as the Academic Husband, who just had to take the computer to Future Shop on the freakin' bus in the middle of a blizzard, and then argue with the guy at the store about this, lose the argument, and pay for them to fix the damned thing.

Going to watch Pride and Prejudice (BBC) with the boy. Colin Firth-therapy is clearly required.

*wince*

Yeah, software is almost never covered, because I'd wager that most of the time, when it's something with the software, it's PEBKAC -- Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair. :-/ The harddrive goes? Not your fault. The motherboard decides it just wants to take a really long nap? Not your fault. Windows goes KERBOOM? Likely something you did. So extended warranties on computers cover the harddrive, the motherboard, all those components inside the box. They don't cover the software that gets installed. Sucks, but, well, usually it's something the user has done.

Oh FINE, be logical *sighs* Yeah, you and I talked about it, and I get it, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. And if it's not going to cover software problems, they should make that very clear. AH doesn't remember a word about that in the conversation with the salesman.

UGH UGH UGH. Stupid computers. Stupid computer people. And, if I'm the one who buggered it up, stupid me too.

That sucks.. I feel your pain. I've always been suckered into buying extended warranties but everyone always tells me it's a giant waste of money, sigh. I just got a new laptop though.... and it was like $1000 and the sales guy did a good job of selling me the usefulness of the extended warranty so I went for it.... so let's hope it actually helps if it screws up :(

But yeah that really sucks about that... I've heard the worst about Future Shop extended warranties too D:

Hopefully they can at least fix your problem thjough!

I think that they should be able to fix it, and extended warranties are usually worth it, it just... gah, I really get frustrated when you don't get all the stuff covered. Especially for a not even 4 month old machine.

But we wanted the coverage since for whenever we move again, and Future Shop is nation wide, so... but still-UGH. Not pleased.

*hugs you*

Poor Jay! We can be miserable together. Your computer went boom, my kidneys went boom! And yay for Colin Firth *points to icon*. Ima go read the book I just got out from the library.

Which, funnily enough is Pride and Prejudice.

[identity profile] linden-jay.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Precious, what happened to your kidneys!?!?! I shall fret about you now!

Did you get the email I sent you re: Colin, btw? Would have been yesterday... *g*

[identity profile] lady-adrian.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
*frantically checks emails*

Well, I got my period, and I'm one of those poor sods who gets unbearable pain for three days before and after (as well as during) my period. I missed Christmas lunch due to it. This pain also involves burning when I pee (sorry if it's TMI, lol). So, of course, I didn't recognise the pain as unusual, until I got home yesterday and the lightbulb went off. *sighs*

What the hell? I hate loopholes! If you paid for the warranty, they should fix it for free until it expires. That is SO LAME.

Colin Firth therapy can fix just about anything though. =)

I know-- I can't stand stuff like that and it makes me wan to punch kittens in the head. Stupid computer people. And I don't cope well when technology fails me.

Colin Firth is damned good therapy. And the Academic Husband is a Pride and Prejudice junkie, so that cheered him up too.

see that is why I have a Mac. I know computer nerds hate that you can't change the source tags and code and whatever the fuck that is, Source tags and code is the name of a record I have. Anyway, mac's don't have many virus and I have always found teh support pople helpful and if it goes sploddy you send it back and they fix it.

that is all I require. (and I confess I sometimes go to dodgey porn-ish sites, so I like things that don't allow spyware or zombie things and whatever other nasties are out there.)
