Slash delurked

After six months of lurking since I discovered both livejournal and slash fanfiction, I have decided to officially de-lurk, admit my addiction, and, well, be able to access communities and journals that have become friends-locked since I started (growl).

My descent into the world of slash:

Back in February, I ended up clicking a link to a story by scribbulus_ink while looking for (I swear to God) a Trixie Belden fanfiction story based on a storyline from "Sports Night" by Aaron Sorkin. For anyone who knows or cares what I'm talking about, the storyline was Dana's dating plan, but that is already getting me into a scary kind of digression.

Trixie Belden, for everyone who likely doesn't know, is a Nancy Drew-type set of books written in...hell, I don't know, but my Mom gave them to me, they were hers when she was little (I'm 25), and the characters say "gee whiz" a lot, and solve crimes. Why I found this particular story, I don't think I'll go into, since anyone reading this has probably already backed away from the freak, but I find it oddly interesting that I discovered slash while searching for a fanfic based on a children's book series that is so squeaky clean it makes "The Babysitters Club" look like a den of crack whores.

Somehow, the search string I pull up has a link to scribbulus_ink's "Wicked Games" series - which features Snape/Lupin. I start giggling, and tell academic husband what I have found. He makes "ick" face. I start to read story, partly out of general curiosity, and partly, well, to piss him off.

If there was ever an ideal story to get someone hooked into slash, or fanfiction in general, this would be it (incidentally, I don't know scribbulus_ink at all, having been a lurker up till now, and am essentially reccing her without her knowledge - I hope that isn't something bad to do). It is the gateway drug of slash, because it is a huge 3 part arc where the characters don't even kiss until part the third - but the characters and the story arc are so compelling, that by the time they got to the smut, I was no longer reading the story for shits and giggles, and I was barely questioning why I was finding this (this being fanfic, slash, detailed NC17 sex scene using canonical characters I had never pictured in any of these situations-all new things in my experience) so appealing.

So, the short version after the long version is that I started out in the Harry Potter fandom, then moved on to The Lord of the Rings (primarily morgana and ilye's stories which centre around elves). I have since been tossing aside nearly every squick I thought I had, starting with RPS, (lotr based - mostly men and elves, although I will dabble in hobbits if you can write Billy with a convincing accent - think abundantlyqueer) then reading au's (again abundantlyqueer, also tarnishedraven and chaos_manor), and have recently started following the establishment - a kinky online roleplaying game. Not bad for a good little lutheran girl from Canada.

So, what can you expect to find in my journal, assuming anyone has made it this far, besides the academic husband (who has been encouraging me to do this despite his mild disapproval of fanfiction- he's a writer, and I think the idea of someone pairing up his characters in creative and unusual ways makes him do the brow furrow thing).

In truth, I don't know. Possibly long personal babbling like this, although I promise to try and put in frequent paragraphs so that no one goes blind trying to read giant single spaced reams of text (not that THAT is something that you see a lot of online say, in the stories written by the many Mary Sue's who post at aff.net).

I did create this journal partly to be able to access some of the friends-locked communities online, so those should be slowly appearing in my userinfo, which may give people a better idea of what I'm into. I may also be posting rec's to stories I like, articles I find, whatever. I guess it's my journal and I can do whatever I want (see me letting the power go to my head now that I'm all delurky)!
